I currently teach four classes at Darrell Thomas Textiles: 101-1 Tote Bag and Apron, 101-2 Pyjama Pants, and 101-3 Fitted Skirt (Introduction to Sewing classes) plus the NEW ladies blouse class!

Darrell Graham is the owner of this fabulous store in Ottawa, and he is a trained fashion designer (as are most of his staff).  Darrell’s classes are focused on garment sewing and on professional techniques used in industry. I’ve taken every single one of his classes and I would recommend them all! Below is a description of the three classes which I teach. Introduction to Sewing 101-1: Lined Tote Bag & Apron (4 week class, 2 hour sessions)

Everyone can learn to Sew with the proper instruction. This class is entry level. We will teach you everything to get you started sewing. This Class will be a 100% hands on experience. Sewing will be done in our classroom. In this class you will learn….

  1. All about your sewing machine
  2. Proper threading techniques
  3. Pressure feet and their purposes
  4. Different stitches and their uses
  5. Controlling your machine to make straight seams
  6. Seam finishing
  7. Create a Designer Tote Bag
  8. Make a designer Apron
  9. Proper pressing techniques

Introduction to Sewing 101-2: Pyjama Pants (4 week class, 2 hour sessions)

Everyone can learn to Sew with the proper instruction. This class is entry level. Prerequisite: 101-1 or equivalent experience. We will teach you everything to get you started sewing. This Class will be a 100% hands on experience. Sewing will be done in our classroom. In this class you will learn….

  1. How to read a Sewing Pattern
  2. Understanding pattern markings
  3. Laying out of fabric
  4. Proper cutting of fabric
  5. Following Pattern Instructions
  6. Choosing Appropriate Fabrics
  7. Operating a Serger
  8. Constructing the Pyjama Pant

Introduction to Sewing 101-3: The Designer Fitted Skirt (4 week class, 2.5 hour sessions)

In this course, students will learn all of the elements to create a professional looking skirt. The Skirt will have facings and an invisible zipper. All of the students will learn how to create a muslin from their measurements, read a pattern and alter your pattern for future use.  The Skirt can be created in approximately 1 hour after all of the tips are learned. Sewing machines are provided and sewing will be done in our classroom. Prerequisite: 101-2 or equivalent experience.

Ladies Fitted Blouse (4 week class, 2.5 hour sessions)

In this course, each student will create a lovely blouse with a shawl collar and darts to fit the garment to your figure. We will be making Version ‘B’ with short sleeves. The blouse has darts on the front of the blouse and also on the back. This will enable the student to have a more tailored blouse. Also there is a beautiful Shawl collar which is quite an elegant touch. In this Class we will be using Burda #6533 Version ‘B’. This class will be similar to the skirt class, a muslin will be made in class with the teacher and fittings provided.
